What are Poll Workers?
Poll Workers are temporary employees of the
Supervisor of Elections office that are assigned to work at each of the
polling locations for an election. Poll workers have various
responsibilities that can include transport, setup and operation of
voting equipment at the polls, checking voter registrations,
distributing ballots, demonstrating voting procedures, etc.
There are five
(5) types of positions at each polling place: Precinct
Coordinators, EviD Operators, Ballot Box Operators, TSX Operators and
Election Deputy (see
below for details on each job).
How Can I Become a Poll
Worker?
You may call the
Supervisor of Elections Office at 754-4125 or the Poll Worker Coordinator
at 540-6302 and request a poll worker application, or you may complete an
on-line request form. Once the application has been completed and sent to
us, you will be called for an interview with the Poll Worker
Coordinator.

Poll Workers
must be citizens of the United States and a registered voter in Hernando
County.

You must be capable of lifting a minimum of
35 pounds ( ballot boxes, voting equipment, etc.)
Job Descriptions
-
The Precinct Coordinators are in charge of
the polling place and are ultimately responsible for its performance.
The PC assures that the voted ballots and supplies get to the Supervisor
of Elections office after the polls close. Precinct Coordinators are
required to have experience and complete a state mandated training
class.

The TSX Operators set up and break down the
touch screen voting equipment and encode voter access cards. When there
are no voters needing to use the touch screen voting equipment, the TSX
operator serves in the position of ballot attendant. Required to
complete a state mandated training class.

The Ballot Box Operator sets up and mans the
Accu-vote offers instructions to the voter on the proper procedure for
inserting his/her ballot into the Accu-vote, and transmits the results
the Supervisor of Elections office at the end of the day. Required to
complete a state mandated training class.

The EViD Operator identifies and processes voters;, issues voting
a pass or refer to clerk pass, and makes changes when necessary to
the voter's information. He/she helps set up and break down the
polling place . Required to complete a state mandated training class.

The Deputy is responsible for setting up and taking down precinct signs
outside the polling place . During the day, the deputy is on duty
outside the polling place door to greet voters and maintain order.
Required to complete a state mandated training class by Sheriff's Office
and Supervisor of Elections office.
Training
Elections
Training Sessions:
Florida Statute 102.014(1) requires all poll
workers to attend a mandatory training session prior to each election.
Each person attending the training session will be paid minimum wage.
Physical
Requirements:
Physical requirements include standing,
bending, stooping, lifting approximately 35 lbs., normal vision and manual/physical dexterity.
Work Hours and Rates of Pay
The average election day
begins at 6:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 8:00 p.m. The rates of pay
per election day worked are as follows:
