Glossary of Terms

Accu-Vote - Optical scan voting equipment that uses paper ballots.

Affirmation - A sworn statement for various changes in a voter's registration information. It is a legal size yellow form.

Ballot Card - A one-sheet paper ballot, which is inserted into and read by the Accu-Vote.

Election Board - Poll workers hired by the Supervisor of Elections to work at the precincts on Election Day. Poll workers work at the will of the Supervisor of Elections. No position is guaranteed from one election to the next.

Precinct Coordinator (PC) - Referred to in the Florida Statutes as the Clerk. A member of the Election Board. The poll worker in charge of the polling place on Election Day. Must be knowledgeable of all poll worker positions.

Voting Equipment Specialist (VES) - A member of the Election Board. The poll worker trained to operate the Accu-Vote / Ballot Box and TSX / Touch screen voting equipment. Performs Accu-Vote and TSX opening and closing procedures. Attends the Accu-Vote and TSX during the day.

EVID Operator (EO) - A member of the Election Board. The poll worker that is trained to operate the check-in EVID and the resolution EVID. 

Check-In EVID - This EVID is used to check voters in and issue a voting pass or a refer to clerk pass. This EVID cannot be used to make changes to a voter's information.

Resolution EVID - This EVID is used to check voters in and issue voting passes. If the voter needs to make a change to his or her information, then the EVID Operator will issue a manual refer to clerk pass. This EVID can be used to make changes to a voter's record only if the voter has a completed yellow affirmation.

Ballot Attendant (BA) - A member of the Election Board. The poll worker trained to receive the voting pass from the voter and issue the correct ballot style according to the voting pass.

Poll Deputy (DEP) - NOT a member of the Election Board. The poll worker jointly trained by the SOE and the Sheriff to serve outside the front door of the polling place. Installs signs, maintains order, greets the voters and admits to the polls only those people allowed by Florida Law. Deputies do not handle ballots.

EVID - Electronic Voter IDentification system. A tabletop computer that is used to check voters in electronically.

Over Vote - When a voter votes for more than the specified number in a race. The Accu-Vote will return the ballot to the voter.

Poll Watcher - Person allowed in the polling place on Election Day in accordance with Florida Law.  This person has been asked by a candidate or a committee to keep track of voters as they proceed through to vote. This individual must be approved by the SOE.

Precinct Register/Poll List (PR/PL) - The alphabetical listing of the registered voters who live in a precinct. 

SOE - Supervisor of Elections

Spoiled Ballot - A ballot card on which a voter has made a mistake while voting. There is a limit of three ballots allowed per voter.

TSX Audio/Visual Equipment - Audio/Visual touch screen voting equipment. This device allows voters who are blind or visually impaired to vote independently.

Under Vote - When a voter does not vote in a race. The Accu-Vote will not return teh ballot to the voter unless the entire ballot is blank.
